Calvin J. Serpas, PG
Background
Mr. Serpas has years of extensive Exploration and Production evaluation experience in the United States, Alaska, and International reservoirs. Prior to starting CJS Serpas Petrophysics in April 2019, he worked with a wide number of companies throughout Louisiana and Texas.
He received his BS degree in Zoology/Chemistry from Southeastern Louisiana University. Early in his career, he worked for a wireline service company, Dresser Atlas, as a Senior and General Field engineer, Log Analyst and Technical Sales Engineer. He then worked for Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) Research as a Principal Petrophysicist providing petrophysical analysis and training for the United States, Alaska, and International districts. He first started CJS Serpas Petrophysics, Inc. in 1993. He was President and CEO for his own company for 8 years, providing petrophysical analysis for Major and Independent Energy companies in the United States and International basins. He later spent 17 years working for Tom Brown, Encana, Concho, Whiting, Apache, and SM-Energy as a Senior Technical Petrophysical/Petrophysicist Advisor performing petrophysical analysis for the Permian Basin and other US Basins in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Most recently, he was Chief Petrphysicist/SVP at Trey Resources, leading the Geoscience team from May 2018 to May 2019.
Awards, Professional Involvement, and Certifications
He received a 2016 SM Energy award for Acquisition Team Petrophysical Support to acquire Rock Oil Holdings, and QStar LLC 2.6 Billion in the Permian Basin.
From 2012 – 2016, SM Energy began a project to identify the premier opportunities in the Permian Basin
Calvin Serpas, then Senior Petrophysicist at SM, processed thousands of logs to provide petrophysical data used to refined maps in the Midland and Delaware Basins and identify prime areas for acquisition / development
In 2016, Mr. Serpas and his work was integrated with the geological and engineering data to verify and support SM’s acquisition of ~60,000 net acres for ~$2.6 billion; nicknamed “Rockstar”
Primarily in Howard County
Minimal production, ~8,000 Boepd, at the time of acquisition
SM’s horizontal location count in the Midland Basin increased from ~700 locations at the beginning of 2016 to over 4,000 by the end of 2016
He was on the Tom Brown acquisition team providing petrophysical support to acquire Matador, and the Concho acquisition team to acquire Mac Energy and Henry Petroleum.
He is an active SPWLA, AAPG, SPE, WTGS, PB-SEPM, HGS member, received a 2011 SPE Southwestern North America Region Formation Evaluation Award, and is a licensed Professional Geoscientist of the State of Texas.
Skills and Expertise
Strengths include petrophysical evaluation of tight gas, shale gas, unconventional, clastic, carbonate, and fractured reservoirs, core to log calibration and communicating the results of the analysis. Skilled in petrophysical interpretation techniques, integrating geological, engineering, and geophysical data into the petrophysical evaluation in both vertical and horizontal wells for reservoir characterization, field studies, or wildcat well evaluation. Proficient in current state-of-the-art petrophysical and geological software providing petrophysical analysis with digital data or analog prints of various vintages.
